Damage Detection of the 2011 Tohoku, Japan Earthquake from High-resolution SAR Intensity Images

چکیده
The Tohoku earthquake of March 11, 2011, caused gigantic tsunamis and widespread devastation. Various high-resolution satellites quickly captured the details of affected areas, and were used for emergency response. In this study, high-resolution preand post-event TerraSAR-X intensity images were used to identify damaged buildings. Since the damaged buildings show changes in backscatter intensity, they can be detected by calculating the difference and correlation coefficient. A GIS map was introduced to identify individual damaged buildings and investigate their characteristics. The results were compared with a visual interpretation of the area, which confirmed that the proposed method was highly accurate.

Detection of damage to building side-walls in the 2011 Tohoku, Japan earthquake using high-resolution TerraSAR-X images [8892-37]
Building damage such as to side-walls or mid-story collapse is often overlooked in vertical optical images. Hence, in order to observe such building damage modes, high-resolution SAR images are introduced considering the side-looking nature of SAR. In the 2011 Tohoku, Japan, earthquake, a large number of buildings were collapsed or severely damaged due to repeated tsunamis. One of the important...
متن کاملCharacterization of Flooded Areas Due to the 2011 Tohoku, Japan Earthquake from Sar Intensity Images
The Mw 9.0 Tohoku earthquake on March 11, 2011, which occurred off the Pacific coast of the northeastern (Tohoku) Japan, caused gigantic tsunamis and brought vast devastation and a huge number of casualties. Various high-resolution satellites quickly captured the details of affected areas, and were used for emergency response. In this study, extraction of flooded areas was carried out using pre...
متن کاملDetection of Crustal Movements in the 2011 Tohoku, Japan Earthquake Using High-resolution Sar Data
Significant crustal movements were caused by the 2011 Tohoku, Japan Earthquake. A method for capturing the surface movements from TerraSAR-X intensity images is proposed in this study. First, the buildings were extracted from the preand post-event images using a segmentation approach. Then, the unchanged buildings were detected by matching the buildings in the preand post-event images at simila...
متن کاملBuilding Damage Estimation by Integration of Seismic Intensity Information and Satellite L-band SAR Imagery
For a quick and stable estimation of earthquake damaged buildings worldwide, using Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR) loaded on the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) satellite, a model combining the usage of satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery and Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA)-scale seismic intensity is proposed. In order to expand the existing C-...
متن کاملDamage Detection for the 2003 Algeria Earthquake Using Sar Intensity Images
High-resolution remote sensing using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is one of the most promising technologies for grasping damage information of built-up areas under independence of weather condition and sun illumination. A strong earthquake occurred in the coast of Algeria on May 21, 2003. The cities of Boumerdes and Zemmouri were the most extensively damaged areas. Canadian SAR satellite, RAD...
